What is it?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a tried and trusted method to transform trauma, unwind chronic stress, and reset the nervous system.  Through the lens of body-led work, SE helps increase ones self-confidence, agency, autonomy and self trust.  It supports people in finding deeper, truer ways of being in the body, in relationship, and in the world.  SE will support you in learning how to attend to uncomfortable sensations in your body and gently unwind them through your conscious attention. 

Its origins were developed by Peter Levine, PhD. It is based upon the observation that wild prey animals, though threatened routinely, are rarely traumatized. Animals in the wild utilize innate mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of energy arousal associated with defensive survival behaviors. These mechanisms provide animals with a built-in “immunity’’ to trauma that enables them to return to normal in the aftermath of highly “charged’’ life-threatening experiences. We as humans have this same innate capacity and through the practice of Somatic Experiencing.

Somatic Experiencing (SE™) is a psychobiological method for relieving chronic stress and transforming trauma. It helps reset the nervous system and increases resilience in life.  SE™ helps people find new ways of being in the body, in relationship, and in the world.  It helps to restore a deeper sense of autonomy, confidence and agency in life.  SE will support you in learning how to attend to uncomfortable sensations in your body and gently unwind them through your conscious attention. 

How might an SE session look?

SE is a varied landscape of tools, education and being with.  At it’s heart, it is a slow process of encountering and befriending the nervous system, the body and the whole self. 

During sessions, we begin with developing a sense of safety in our body, the room and our connection.  From there, we look towards ‘the inside’: sensations, pulses, and more to clues into the being that you are.  We gently begin to find places where support might be needed, and work to organically allow the body to guide the session.  We are looking not to “fix” anything, but instead, we move towards an innate place inside each of us where wholeness lives and resolution can occur. 

During an SE session, there may be movement, stillness, touch when consented to, talk and more.  We work at the pace that feels just right for you.  

Is it right for me?

Being a body-based experience, this work often feels new, even to those of us with plenty of talk therapy experience.  SE™ is a bottom up approach, in that the system and body first and foremost gets time to unwind, often without the associated stories/experiences we might be very familiar with.  

Those who are drawn to this work might have a deep curiosity to know themselves and a desire to shift towards choices and behaviors that serve our greater good.  The slowness and curiosity that meets each session is also deeply supportive in this time of uncertainty and change.  

Session Information

I have completed the intermediate year of training, and will continue integrating tools as my training progresses.  In 2026, I will study hands-on SE work with Kathy Kain and complete my Advanced year in 2027. 

Sessions are approx. 55 minutes | $65/session. 

Jen has confidently and beautifully guided me on my journey to process my trauma, build self-awareness and connect with my power. She is intuitive, knowledgeable and affirming.
